My first experience using expired film began in 2009 when the last cache of original Polaroid film was being sold as a fundraising effort for the Impossible Project at Urban Outfitters. Dutifully I stored the precious 12 packs of Polaroid film in my fridge. I began shooting the film with my vintage SX-70 Polaroid cameras; and slowly the stack diminished until 2016, when I loaded the last pack into my SX-70 camera.
Loading my last pack of original Polaroid film was such a momentous occasion that drinks were necessary.
It was a bittersweet moment. Eventhough the Polaroid replacement film made by the Impossible Project (now Polaroid Originals) had greatly improved over the last couple of years it was never on the par with real Polaroid film. Besides, there are only 8 exposures in the new pack film – old Polaroid had 10!
